June 8, 2002

Jim Crownover, Joyce, Bud, Matt, Phil, Chris and
did a trip on the Swatara Creek today.

Water level was about 1.9 feet. June 9, 2002 trip on the Juniata River from Howe Park to Amity Hall.
The Newport gauge was at 5.8 feet. This was a fantastic trip. Unfortunately I did not have a camera. There were just two of us, Phil and Jim. We met the Blue Juniata on the river. Joe Kresge is the owner. He told us that the name of "The Ledge" is Iroquois Falls. He also told us about a real nice spring. Poorman's Spring is a site along the Juniata that needs to be preserved. It is a beautiful historic spring that the Game Commission doesn't want to last.
There are pictures of the spring on this page Later on a group of scouts coming down the river went by us through some rough water. I was sitting behind a submerged rock watching them. I didn't think anyone would head for the rock. Then one of the last 2 canoes started heading right for me. As they got close I realized they were coming over the rock right at me so I started back paddling as hard as I could. They came over the rock and then went sideways and capsized right at my bow. I help the kids with their paddles and stayed with them until we got to the other canoes. They then pulled them to shore and emptied the canoe. We spent some time talking to Joe Kresge. That was the best part of the trip. He knows a lot about the Juniata.
Thank you Joe.
